Participate? This is how it works

You are an indispensable part of the process of developing new and improved medication, helping PRA to improve the quality of life of many people. Read the following four steps to find out how you can participate in drug research.

Step Registering

An up-to-date overview of the studies is always available on our website, so you can register for an appropriate study and for your preferred group. If none of the studies currently listed are appropriate for you, then you can still register generally with PRA and we will notify you of any suitable ones that are added.

1.1 Confirmation email immediately after registration

As soon as you register for a study, you will receive a confirmation email explaining what happens next.

1.2 Telephone screening

Telephone screening will take place between four and six weeks before the start date of the group for which you have registered. This involves going through your details and the requirements of the study with you, so that you know what to expect.

1.3 Appointment for medical screening

If you are eligible for the study, then we will make an appointment for your medical screening during the telephone screening.

1.4 Receiving an information pack

You will receive an information pack from us. This contains documents including a medical questionnaire, the information and consent form, and extensive information about the study and your stay at PRA.

Step Medical screening

To determine whether you are suitable to take part in the study, we always start by inviting you to visit the PRA medical screening center in Groningen or Utrecht for medical screening.

2.1 Preparing for medical screening

You can prepare for the medical screening at home by carefully reading through the information package and noting down any questions that you want to ask during the screening.

2.2 Complying with the rules for medical screening

Some of the rules that apply to the screening need to be followed at home as well. For example, you are not allowed to eat or drink for a few hours beforehand. The rules may vary by study and are listed on your appointment confirmation.

2.3 Reminder

We will send you a text message as a reminder one working day before your appointment.

2.4 Medical screening

You will visit our screening center for your medical screening at the agreed time. During this appointment, you will meet with the doctor, the study will be explained to you and you will undergo a physical examination. Several measurements will also be taken, including your height and weight, a heart tracing will be recorded and blood and urine samples will be taken. The medical screening takes approximately three hours.

2.5 Waiting for the result

After the screening, you will be given something to eat and then you will go home to wait for the result, which is usually takes two or three working days.

2.6 Confirming approval

You will contact PRA by telephone two or three working days after your screening to find out whether you have been approved.

On the day of arrival, you will also undergo a brief screening to see whether your health has changed at all.

3.5 Starting the study

The results of the brief screening are available the following day and the doctor uses them to decide who can actually participate in the study. If you are allowed to participate, then you can stay and the study will begin.

3.6 During the study

During the study you will be administered the study compound in the presence of a doctor or nurse, who will monitor you closely. They will carry out regular checks, including your temperature, blood pressure, blood and urine. You will also have plenty of

Step Follow up & Reimbursement

When the study is over, you will be able to go home knowing that you have contributed to the development of new and improved medication!

4.1 Follow-up screening

A follow-up screening is held once you have participated in the study. This sometimes takes place on the last day of the study, but usually involves a separate visit. The follow-up screening is a short medical examination to check that you are completely healthy and that the drug is completely out of your system.

4.2 Payment

The follow-up screening completes your participation in the study. We will send you an overview of your earnings and transfer this amount, including travel costs, to your bank account within 30 days.

4.3 Would you like to participate again?

If you enjoyed participating, you can sign up for more drug research in 30 days. You may take part in four studies per year. An up-to-date overview of the studies is always available on our website.
